*Sizzle* Thats my mouth burning. This little hole in the wall with its mismatched plates and kids art on the wall is some of the best food I’ve had in SLC. I like spice. I am not afraid. I was about to order my Pad Siew ‘burn your face off spicy’ when I spied a plaque on the wall that said “Best place to burn your tongue off.” I went for Medium +. It was perfect.
We shared the Pad Siew, the Stirfried (perfectly) eggplant, and Tom Yum Soup. Amazing.

One of the best restaurants in Salt Lake and probably the best Thai food I’ve had outside of Thailand. Their tom yum soup (they even have a vegetarian option!) couldn’t be more authentic and their food couldn’t be more delicious.
My friends don’t like to go to Chanon as often as I do because the service takes a little longer than larger restaurants. I’d wait in line in the snow for an hour to eat their food. It’s that good.

Chanon Thai is literally my favourite place to eat! The food is delicious, the portions are generous, and the staff (although busy) is always friendly and they know exactly what I like in my food – SPICE! Tom always knows what I want, he nods and just says, “Uh number 23 crazy spicy…okay.” ?? Love the family that runs and owns it! I know what people complain about most. It’s always – how busy it is, how slow service can be, and how the waiters can sometimes be forgetful. But let’s be honest people – they tend to have a smallish staff composed of family and friends, it’s also usually always crazy PACKED full of people and why is that? The food is amazing! Honestly, I believe it’s totally worth it to wait 30 minutes for a table some nights for a plate of delicious spicy level 10 heaven and tofu tod. Seriously though, I’ve been to a lot of thai restaurants and none of them compare to Chanon Thai. If you are someone who likes really spicy food, go to Chanon. Typically, if you’re new, they like you to try to level 5 spicy dish first to see if you can handle much more. Which is decently spicy, even for me. But if you like nose dripping, face flushed, full on scorch your mouth WTF hot…just ask for a 10 +. I really wish they would get a larger location though – I think it would really help with the bigger crowds and help the staff get more breathing room.

THIS IS THE MOST AUTHENTIC THAI OUTSIDE OF THE COUNTRY ITSELF! I spent two weeks in Chang Mai with a cooking school two summers ago. I learned, I tasted, I cooked, I messed up the easiest of recipes, and I used an entire box of immodium for the whole thing. I. Love. Thai. Therefore, I love Chanon. Very authentic, true Thai ingredients- they’re not faking the kaffir lime or galangal- and the family that runs it is adorable! All the curries are great and their lunch specials are always a steal. I’ve taken to calling in and picking up orders lately since everyone seems to have fallen in love with this place. If you do dine in, plan on slowish service (not bad, just slow), but perfect food. And no meal is complete without their Tom Kha Gai, and get it spicy!

I love this place! The gang panang curry is so delicious I could have it as a beverage! I have yet to find anything that compares to it. They are willing to make many dishes vegan and seem to know about gluten allergies which is nice for people with special dietary needs. Be careful about ordering a “number 5” heat… it’s a scorcher

You’re going to have to shelve some of those traditional American diner expectations. Sure, the service can be hit and miss, the restaurant is cramped and sometimes awkward, and the hours can be a wee bit strange (though they used to be worse). But man oh man, the food is to die for. Seriously. Best Thai food I’ve ever had, at least outside Thailand. They offer a wide range of dishes and every one I’ve had has been spectacular. The all-Thai wait staff do their best to keep up, and most are friendly and helpful. And the prices are very reasonable, especially at lunchtime. You do need to keep an eye on the spice level; don’t be a hero and ask for “authentic” unless you really know what you’re in for. They use a number scale to designate the spice, so if you like it mild be sure to choose the lowest they offer. This is a place you go to for the food. Plain and simple. You’re not going to walk in the door and get pampered, you’ll probably have to ask a passing waiter / waitress for more water, and you may get a little friendly with the table next door. But if you can shelve your fancy restaurant expectations and just embrace the stupendous food, you’re really in for a treat.
Best Thai food in Salt Lake City (proper, anyway). Hands down.
